Call To Worship         (Based on Psalm 105: 1-5)

Pastor:  Let us give thanks to the Lord, call on His name, and make His deeds known to all the people!

People: We will sing to Him, sing praises to Him and tell others of His wonderful works!

Pastor:  Glory in His holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice!

People: We will seek the Lord and His strength; seek His presence continually.

All:  May we remember the wonderful works which He has done! Let us praise the Lord! Amen!    

Prayer of Invocation (In Unison)

God of blessings and miracles, we rejoice that we can worship you once again, just as we are and wherever we are! We aim to glorify you and sing praises to your holy name! May we learn from the story of Jesus’ invitation to Peter, to walk on the water with You. Fill us, O Holy Spirit, with your presence and strength so that we be equipped to be your faithful disciples now and always, Amen.

When we walk with the Lord in the light of His word,

Jesus Walks on the Water

²² Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. ²³ And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, ²⁴ but by this time the boat, battered by the waves, was far from the land, for the wind was against them. ²⁵ And early in the morning he came walking toward them on the sea. ²⁶ But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, saying, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out in fear. ²⁷ But immediately Jesus spoke to them and said, “Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.”

²⁸ Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” ²⁹ He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat, started walking on the water, and came toward Jesus. ³⁰ But when he noticed the strong wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” ³¹ Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” ³² When they got into the boat, the wind ceased. ³³ And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

9^th Sunday After Pentecost

Call to Worship  (Based on Psalm 145)

Pastor: I will extol you, my God and King, and bless your name forever and ever.
People: Every day I will bless you, and praise your name forever and ever.
Pastor: Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; His greatness is unsearchable.
All: The Lord is good to all, and His compassion is over all that He has made!

Prayer of Invocation: In Unison (Alludes to Matthew 14:13-21)

Jesus, you are compassionate and loving. Thank you that you see our hunger too. Hunger for justice, for peace, for the pandemic to be over, and for worship in person, together. Some of us may be hungering for food, just as those in that crowd did, long ago. Your response was to feed them just as you feed us. Help us to be like you O Lord, and not like your disciples on that day, who expected the people to go fend for themselves. Thank you Savior, for showing us what love looks like. Open our hearts and our minds this hour that we may worship you joyfully and go forward with renewed hearts to serve you as we serve others. Amen.

Call to Confession:

Pastor: In the story about feeding a multitude, Jesus asked that people bring to    him what they had. You have done that today. In your many kitchens and living rooms, rest your hands lightly upon these elements which we set aside today to be a sacrament. We ask God’s blessing on them to make them enough, and also to make them abundant for us and for all those who are in our prayers this morning. 

Prayer of Confession (All)

            God of all mercy:
            I confess that sin grips me and
            I cannot break free.
            The sins in my mind, on my lips,
            in my acts done or even ignored
            Stand between me and you. 

          My entire heart is not always yours.
          My love of neighbor falls short.
          In the name of Jesus,
          Have mercy on me. 

          Grant me your renewing forgiveness.
          Lead me on your paths of righteousness,
          And I shall delight in you
          And I shall follow you
          Giving glory to your holy name. Through Jesus Christ.  Amen.

Assurance of Pardon

Pastor:     The God who gives, gives all. 
                    The God who loves, loves all. 
                    The God who forgives, forgives all. 

                    Through Christ, our sins, every one of them:
                    the sins of commission,
                    the sins of omission,
                    the sins we confessed with contrition –
                    all are forgiven.

Prayer of Consecration (In Unison)

God of compassion, you bless and break everything we are and everything we bring to you. Our deep scarcity becomes enough to sustain us, and then our “enough” becomes an abundance we could never imagine. We pray that your Spirit of life and love, of tenderness and power, rest upon every bread and every cup, that they may feed the inmost need of each child of God and pour forth a grace that can change the world. Risen Christ, live in us, that we may live in you. Amen.

Thank you, loving Jesus, for feeding us this morning with these simple elements.  Thank you for what they represent: your ever-loving, gracious   love for all humanity. May we be moved by Christ’s impartial love and, in so doing, always keep our circle of Christian love open. May we never be tired of serving others with compassion and wisdom as you did. Amen.

Pastor: The kingdom of heaven is like:
People: A tiny mustard seed that carries the life of a tree
Pastor: The kingdom of heaven is like:
People: A tiny portion of yeast that makes bread rise
Pastor: The kingdom of heaven is like:
People: A tiny pearl of great price
that we would give all our “stuff” to have
Pastor: The kingdom of heaven is like:
People: A fishing boat filled with catch—good and bad together—
With fisherfolk wise to recognize the good.

Holy One,
you call us to find your kin-dom
already hidden in our world—
in tiny, transforming possibilities;
in beauty that calls us to surrender all;

³¹ He put before them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that someone took and sowed in his field; ³² it is the smallest of all the seeds, but when it has grown it is the greatest of shrubs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.” ³³ He told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed in with^[a] three measures of flour until all of it was leavened.”

⁴⁴ “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which someone found and hid; then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.

⁴⁵ “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls; ⁴⁶ on finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it.

⁴⁷ “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was thrown into the sea and caught fish of every kind; ⁴⁸ when it was full, they drew it ashore, sat down, and put the good into baskets but threw out the bad. ⁴⁹ So it will be at the end of the age.
