Timothy Merrill quotes Scott Powell in “The little known story of the Declaration of Independence”-how it was so serious that when they all signed it on July 4, 1776, they were, in fact, signing their death warrants. So, they didn’t show it to the world until January 1777 after Washington’s victory at the Battle of Trenton.
“Our forebears placed everything on the line and trusted the Almighty for the results.” They were mostly church-going people, like you and me and they saw the Declaration as a religious as well as a secular act.
